Ferguson Printing has been a family business in Gouverneur for more than 50 years. The business was started by Charles A. Ferguson, a linotype operator, who worked for the Gouverneur Tribune Press, the Watertown Daily Times and other newspapers. Offset printing improved in the 1950's and Charles Ferguson opened his own shop November 14, 1960. In addition to printing, he published "The Sports News of the Gouverneur Area" from 1963 until his death in 1982. The publication focused on high school sports, bowling and a few hunting and fishing stories.

Gale, (known as "Fergie") was in his first year at the Rochester Institute of Technology, when his father had a stroke. Mr Ferguson never returned to school, but continued in the family printing business. He said of the business when interviewed in the Watertown Daily Times in 2010, "When we do a job, we assign it a number. We keep a sample of every job. We have to clean it out every now and then, but right now, we're up to 24,896 and work's still in progress."
